Click Here to read information provided by Charge Nurse Joe Forster

A cutting edge Low Secure Unit that cares for adult patients with mental illness and possible drug dependency. The hospital was built by Laing O'Rourke for Mersey care NHS trust. Mersey Care's Charge Nurse Joe Forster was instrumental in the development of our Safevent window. He could see its potential when a prototype was demonstrated and insisted on its use on Rathbone. Since the hospital opened in summer 2006 the window has been praised by patients and staff alike and Joe has become a leading advocate of the Safevent window.

Since this original order Mersey Care have ordered the Britplas Safevent Window at Broadgreen Hospital Broad Oak Unit, Fazakerley Hospital Stoddard Unit, Scott Clinic and Avalon Hospital.

Alpha Hospital Sheffield

Anti ligature window

Alpha Hospitals have built this Medium Secure Hospital in Sheffield to expand patient care at their existing women's rehabilitation unit. The project was already underway when our window was recommended to their estates department. A visit was arranged to Rathbone hospital to view the Safevent windows in situe. The estate and clinical staff where very impressed, and an order was placed soon after.

As part of the contract we also provided a link corridor conservatory and feature curtain walling.

Fairfield Hospital Bury

After receiving an email about our Safevent window Bernhard Hadland (a manager from Costains) saw it's potential and arranged a meeting with us. We took him to visit Rathbone Hospital and see the windows in situe. He was very impressed and recommended our window for a mental health unit Costains were building for Pennine Care.

Pennine Care NHS Trust felt the Safevent window made so much difference, they are rolling it out across the trust.

As of December 2007 orders have been placed and / or completed at Stepping Hill Hospital, 4 x projects at Tameside Hospital, 2 x projects at Fairfield Hospital, Royal Oldham Hospital, Birch Hill Rochdale and more in the pipeline.

Avalon Hospital Liverpool

The second mental health unit for Mersey Care NHS Trust.

After seeing first hand the benefits of our Safevent window with the Rathbone project, Laing O'Rourke did not need to involve any other window company, Safevent was automatically specified.

Our second project for Pennine Care was a small extension. Aluminium Safevent windows were specified brown outside, white inside.

Tameside Hospital HDU

Anti ligature window

Our third project for Pennine Care.

When a patient escaped from a bedroom window at the HDU, Joe Preshur head of security for Pennine Care, placed an order for Safevent windows. He had been on a visit to Rathbone initially and was happy with the work we had already done for Pennine Care. A wood effect uPVC was chosen for this project. Every window including offices and staff areas has been fitted with a Safevent window as it allows much more ventilation, is pleasing to look at, secures the room from inside and out and makes the room future proof should it be needed for a patient subsequently.

Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, Wotton Lawn

Anti ligature window

After having some regrettable incidents with their existing windows estates manager John Leech started a comprehensive search for the best replacement.

While surfing the Net he came across our Safevent window and contacted us. We arranged a visit for a group of staff to Rathbone Hospital where they were very impressed. They had narrowed the search down to two. They placed an order for a sample Safevent window to be fitted. They also had a rival company fit a sample window.

Due to it's appearance, the Safevent window was a big favourite from the start. But after extensive testing by the trust's staff and safety experts the Safevent was the undisputed first choice.

GBS Architects of Oxford were searching for a window solution for various projects they had been given by Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire NHS Trust. They had our Safevent window recommended to them and were most impressed with it. So much so, orders were placed for five projects throughout the area in aluminium and uPVC.

Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire NHS Trust now specify the Safevent window.

The pictures adjacent show wood effect uPVC Safevent windows at the women's forensic unit and red aluminium Safevent windows at Littlemore hospitals cash office (the Safevent windows are secure from both sides).

Since the first projects were completed further orders have been placed, with more in the pipeline.

Thornford Park, Priory Health Care

Anti ligature window

The estates manager for Priory Health Care came across the Safevent Website while searching for a window solution for there secure mental health units. We met at Thornford Park, Newbury where we were able to demonstrate the many benefits of the Safevent window.

A sample window was ordered for a live bedroom. Immediately after its installation an order was placed for the rest of the ward. We have since completed 5 new orders for Priory and have many orders to complete in 2008.

Bristol Grange, Priory Health Care

Having already witnessed the robust construction of our Safevent windows, Britplas were called in to replace several existing wooden windows destroyed by a patient.

As you can see from the pictures the Safevent window can be made to match existing windows. These are oak effect uPVC outside and white inside.

The 5 Boroughs Partnership first approached us over a project they were working on in Warrington. They were well into the refurbishment when a member of the estates team visited Rathbone and realised the Safevent window be the best option for them. Unfortunately they had already contracted another window company and the cost of pulling out was prohibitive.

Their next project was Peasley Cross Hospital and an order was placed for Safevent windows. The Trust were so pleased with the performance of their new windows they sent us to Whiston Hospital to begin another refurbishment.

Whiston Hospital, St Helens

Anti ligature windows

The 5 Boroughs second project with us so far.

The Safevent windows were chosen to replace inadequate existing windows. As you can see from these pictures (the first floor windows are the originals) the existing restricted windows do not allow enough natural ventilation and the restrictor bar outside is an unmistakeable ligature risk.

The lower Safevent windows allow maximum ventilation and are simple and secure without the need for ugly add-ons like bars etc.

Fairfield Hospital, Bury

Anti ligature windows

Our seventh project for Pennine Care. The unusual choice of black aluminium (inside and out) actually looks fantastic as a finished product. A party from North East London Mental Health Trust (NELMET), who were visiting the North West to view some Safevent windows, were very impressed and placed an order for a project in Ilford.

We are now replacing the windows and building a conservatory for the pensioners day centre on the ground floor.

Ridge Lea Hospital, Lancaster

Anti ligature windows

Our First project for Lancashire Care.

Ridge Lea Hospital provides inpatient services for adults aged 16 to 65 including an acute admission ward, a low secure unit and a psychiatric intensive care unit.

A beautiful old stone building like Ridge Lea is more challenging to work with than a newer hospital. The results are still the same, higher levels of ventilation, warmer rooms in winter, cooler rooms in summer, happier staff and patients.

Our second project for Gloucestershire.

A small (42 window) project was carried out using blue aluminium Safevent windows to match the existing entrance doors.

Brookside Unit, Goodmayes Hospital, Ilford

Anti ligature windows

NELMET were recommended to Britplas Commercial Windows by a former client. They sent a party to visit a selection of Hospitals where the Safevent window was already in use. After viewing the windows and talking to clinical staff and end users they placed an order.

While completing the survey NELMET asked about our security fencing with anti ligature and privacy cloaking. They felt it necessary to reduce the ligature risk as the patients could be unsupervised in the outside area and the cloaking would add an extra level of privacy from the residential properties overlooking the site and passers by.

The fence ordered consists of a 4m high anti climb prison mesh with 3m cloaking and includes a 3m high anti ligature gate.

The Britplas Safevent(TM) window has been featured many times in the press.

It has also been officially recognised by our peers in the industry.

This Anti-Ligature window has been tested by several different NHS trusts. It's anti ligature status makes it perfect for secure mental health facilities. It has been and is being installed in low, medium and high secure mental health units. It gives the room full natural ventilation with no need to restrict the opening. It has anti-ligature handles, and as it has no need for locks, this too helps its anti ligature status. If you are looking for the best anti ligature window for your hospital, LSU, MSU, HSU, HDU, PICU, ACUTE UNITS or forensic mental heath facility the anti ligature Safe Vent window is it. UPVC / STEEL / ALUMINIUM / WOOD. The Safevent window was originally designed for a secure unit hospital in Liverpool and is anti ligature. It gives the patient full control of the rooms ventilation (no vent size restrictions) while stopping the passing of contraband in or out and does not allow escape. We have a recording of the NHS test in which patients and staff attack the window with a wooden chair, a large lounge chair, a knife, a stereo, a TV, a pool cue, pool balls and physically kicking and grappling for an hour. The mesh is 1.5mm stainless steel powder coated black. The glass (left) in the slider (sash) is 6.4 Laminated, the glass in the fixed (right) is 10mm toughened. This is so they can test the inner and outer glass at the same time. We fit self-cleaning 6.4 Lami to the outside and 10mm toughened inside. The 10mm will take a great deal of punishment without damaging it, but if it does break, it disintegrates into small pieces. The 6.4 laminated glass will break more easily but holds together and will hinder escape. If you have any other glass preferences, we will be able to accommodate you. The test starts with a kicking attack on the mesh through the open window. Then they try a wooden chair and a brick on the mesh. Next is a scanner (simulating a personal stereo) being thrown at the glass. (The sound of breaking glass is from the scanner not the window). After this they swing a 3 pin (UK) plug at the glass trying to see if the metal pins have any effect. Then onto a TV/video which has no effect on the 10mm toughened but does crack the 6.4 Lami. The laminated holds together as demonstrated immediately after by attacking it with a snooker cue. A snooker ball is used after this. A large lounge chair is then pounded against the window until the chair falls apart. Back to the snooker cue on glass and mesh, then the brick again.

This SafeVent Anti-ligature or Anti Ligature window will help to save lives. It helps to prevent the patients from hanging themselves (anti ligature). It also prevents them from escaping and putting their lives at risk. It makes their stay at the hospital a much more pleasant experience. But it's biggest asset is it's anti ligature status.
