If you require any further information or advice please do not hesitate to contact us. Cleaning & Maintenance Due to the SafeVent windows unique and simple design it requires very little maintenance. The rollers can benefit from a squirt of lube every few months and the frames drainage holes should be checked to make sure they are all clear. That’s it!! There are no locks or fiddly moving parts, no hinges or complicated handles and none of the springs and pulleys you get from a vertical slider. SafeVent has less maintenance therefore less expense. It is that simple. Cleaning Advice. We provide a full fitting service for any project size. From a single window, to a full Hospital complex, we will provide the management and fitting crews to carry out your installation with as little disruption as possible. Our workforce has experience of working in live secure hospitals. They are all aware of their responsibilities with regards to tool safety, waste materials and final checks on every window and room. You will find our staff pleasant, helpful and willing to accommodate any special requirements you may have. We plan every job thoroughly with all interested parties to make sure the staff and patients are not unnecessarily inconvenienced. Various Options Although by far the most affordable frame option for the SafeVent window is UPVC, it is also available in aluminium and wood. In UPVC it is available in any colour you require. It can also have a different inside colour from the outside e.g. white inside / blue outside. This is also true of our aluminium frames. The wooden frames are installed primed for painting or stained. We can also provide a Non-mesh SafeVent with restricted openings if required. The restrictors may be removed by staff to provide wide open windows onto a ground floor secured area if appropriate. The same restrictor blocks can be fitted by staff at any time to a meshed SafeVent to fix it closed, fix it open or to restrict the opening should the need arise to stop a patient from controlling their window. If you require it, any SafeVent window can be fitted with solar control glass. This may be appropriate for south facing elevations, and does not affect the original make up of the glass unit (it is still self-cleaning). The SafeVent window can be incorporated into curtain walling. Integrated blinds can be installed with a different glass specification. The stainless steel mesh can be supplied in two main options. These are 2mm holes on a 3mm matrix (giving 40% open area) or 3mm holes on a 4mm matrix (giving a 51% open area). Using 1.5mm thick stainless steel (a table knife blade) they are both equally strong. The stainless steel mesh is powder coated black as standard, but can be coated any colour required. The SafeVent Window has no maximum size. The patient, as you may imagine, gets a truer sense of freedom and control from being able to push a window wide open allowing the fresh air and sound into their room. This contrasts starkly with 100mm restricted openings, trickle vents or worst of all mechanical ventilation. The mesh has another big benefit, it is a very effective fly screen. On a summers day your patients can push the window fully open and remain unmolested by gnats, flies, bees or wasps. In short, with the BRITplas SafeVent window, you get an anti-ligature window that prevents escape, prevents the passing of contraband, prevents the littering of outside areas, allows high levels of natural light and ventilation and does not require keys or staff supervision for the patient to operate it. Features and Benefits The BRITplas SafeVent window has an in line horizontal sliding action allowing up to 50% of the window area to open without the need for hinges, locking points, levers or handles that can create ligature points. It has an easy sliding action so that the vast majority of patients, even the very frail, can use it. This also helps if anyone should try to close the window to trap a ligature (front or back), once pressure is applied, the window pulls open. (This was tested and found to be the case by Gloucestershire NHS Trust). The SafeVent’s open area is covered with a sheet of stainless steel punched with holes to make a mesh. Although, in description, this sounds austere it is actually surprisingly discrete. The mesh obviously prevents escape, but also stops the passing of contraband while allowing fresh air along with natural sound and light to enter the room. Since fitting the SafeVent into working hospitals we have been told that the mesh also prevents the dropping of objects and waste onto the grounds of the hospital, saving hours of cleaning up every week (not to mention expense). The SafeVents standard glazing comprises of a 10mm toughened sheet to the inside of the room, a 10mm air gap (Argon filled for insulation) and an 8.4mm laminated section to the outside. The 10mm toughened glass can withstand a great deal of punishment without breaking. The 8.4 laminated would also take a lot of punishment but would break before the 10mm. However once broken the 8.4mm holds together on a sheet of poly bonding (much like a car windscreen), this helps to prevent escape. With this in mind we chose to position the 10mm toughened glass inside for extra strength, reducing the amount of broken units. Then, for the determined and persistent patient that manages to break the 10mm, the 8.4mm laminated (although it may crack) will prove a daunting impediment to escape. All of our SafeVent units have self-cleaning glass as standard. This glazing unit complies with the Document ‘L’ guidelines with regards to ‘U’ values. If you have a preferred Glazing option or any specific requirements, we will be able to accommodate your needs. The SafeVent Window was developed after BRITplas was approached by Laing O’Rourke to provide a window solution for a project they were contracted to build. This was Rathbone LSU for Merseycare NHS Trust.Laing O’Rourke had approached in excess of twenty other window companies. None of them could provide a window that could cope with the range of difficulties faced by such an important fixture of a secure mental health hospital. After a meeting with their project manager and design manager Kevin Gorman came up with the SafeVent window. Within a few weeks we had a prototype made up and delivered to Ashworth Hospital for a meeting that was to take place with patients and staff. The window was demonstrated to them and received praise from all quarters. It was then agreed that a window should be installed at Ashworth, and a rigorous test should take place witnessed by all interested parties. The window was attacked vigorously by patients and staff. They kicked, barged, pushed and pulled every component of the window. They then used various objects that may be found around the hospital. Snooker balls, snooker cues, knives, televisions, chairs etc… The SafeVent window passed with flying colours and an order was placed for Rathbone hospital. In the few months since the SafeVent system has been installed at Rathbone LSU (2006) we have received orders from all over the country.
